Fuchsia & Lime: An Unexpected Autumn Colour Story
When we think about autumn flowers, we often think of rust, terracotta, burnt orange, caramel and deep burgundy.
But autumn doesn’t have to be warm and earthy.
One of my favourite colour combinations this season is fuchsia and lime — a bold, unexpected pairing that brings energy, freshness and a contemporary feeling to autumn floral design.
At first, the colours might seem almost too bright for the season. But place them alongside the deeper tones of autumn — plum, burgundy, wine and dusky pink — and suddenly the lime green becomes incredibly sophisticated.
A different way to see autumn
I love using colour to challenge the way we traditionally think about seasonal flowers.
The combination of acid lime and intense fuchsia creates a wonderful tension: the lime feels fresh and almost electric, while the darker pinks and purples bring depth and richness.
In this colour story, I worked with hydrangeas, carnations, chrysanthemums, gerberas and orchids, each bringing a different texture and shape to the palette.
The ruffled texture of carnations works beautifully with the dense, sculptural forms of chrysanthemums. Hydrangeas add volume and softness, while orchids introduce an elegant, almost exotic element.
And then there are the different shades of pink — from deep magenta and raspberry to plum and dusky rose — which stop the lime from feeling too playful.
Why not orange?
There is nothing wrong with the traditional autumn palette. I love it too.
But floral design is also about finding new ways of looking at familiar seasons.
Fuchsia and lime offer an alternative to the predictable autumn colour story.
They work particularly beautifully for weddings, events and installations where you want something seasonal without becoming obviously “autumnal”.
The result can feel luxurious, modern and slightly unexpected.
Colour creates emotion
For me, this is what makes working with flowers so exciting.
The same autumn season can be interpreted in completely different ways simply by changing the colour palette.
Instead of brown and orange, imagine:
Lime. Fuchsia. Plum. Burgundy. Raspberry.
Suddenly autumn feels completely different.
And perhaps that is the beauty of floral design — there are no rules saying that autumn has to look like autumn.
Would you use fuchsia and lime for an autumn wedding or event?
Love,
Julia
