Hydrangeas: The Timeless Elegance of Luxury Wedding Floristry
There are some flowers that simply never go out of style, and for me, the hydrangea is one of them.
Its generous shape, delicate texture, and extraordinary palette of colours make it one of the most versatile flowers in luxury wedding floristry. From soft ivory and blush pink to powder blue, lilac, sage green, and deep burgundy, hydrangeas have an effortless elegance that few flowers can match. Their large flower heads create volume and impact, allowing florists to transform a space with fewer stems while maintaining a refined and luxurious aesthetic.
Hydrangeas are particularly valued in high-end weddings because they create a feeling of abundance. Whether used in lavish ceremony arches, elegant table arrangements, grand entrance displays, or romantic bridal bouquets, they bring softness, sophistication, and a timeless sense of beauty. Their rounded form blends beautifully with garden roses, sweet peas, delphiniums, and seasonal foliage, yet they are equally breathtaking when used on their own in a monochromatic design.
My own love for hydrangeas began long before I became a florist.
As a child, my family spent many of our summer holidays on the shores of Lago Maggiore in northern Italy. Every year, I looked forward to seeing the magnificent hydrangea bushes that flourished around the villas and gardens overlooking the lake. Even then, I was mesmerised by their gentle pastel colours. They seemed almost dreamlike against the backdrop of the Italian landscape, creating an atmosphere of romance and tranquillity that has stayed with me ever since.
Looking back, I realise those summers shaped my appreciation for colour, texture, and natural beauty. The soft blues, dusty pinks, creamy whites, and gentle lavender tones of the hydrangeas continue to influence my floral designs today.
Recently, my sister sent me a photograph from a luxury wedding at Lake Como. The entire celebration had been designed almost exclusively with hydrangeas, proving that sometimes the most powerful floral statement comes from embracing the beauty of a single flower. The effect was breathtaking—elegant, sculptural, and effortlessly luxurious. It was a wonderful reminder that great design is not about using as many different flowers as possible, but about understanding how one flower, used thoughtfully and with confidence, can completely transform a space.
At the Berlin Flower School, I often encourage my students to look beyond individual flowers and think about the atmosphere they want to create. Hydrangeas teach us an important lesson in floral design: scale, colour, and texture can be just as powerful as rarity. Their ability to fill a room with softness and elegance makes them an enduring favourite for wedding florists around the world.
Every time I work with hydrangeas, I am reminded of those childhood summers in Italy. They are more than simply a flower to me—they are a symbol of beauty, memory, and timeless elegance. Perhaps that is why they continue to hold such a special place in my heart and why, year after year, they remain one of my favourite flowers for creating unforgettable wedding celebrations.
